Pioneered by such restyling maestros as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Bill Hines, Bill Cushenberry, George Barris, Darryl Starbird, the Alexander Brothers and Ed Roth, Kustom cars wonderfully combine fascination of 1950s Americana The style is thought to have originated with George Barris, but it’s a distinctive style consisting of lowered suspension, chopped roofs, sectioning, channeling and shaving of the body and extensive use of panel and trim from other makes and models.
The builders of these Kustom cars are fabricators of unlimited vision for Kustom styling. They have mastered the metal fabrication in an old school way which uses no bondo or fiberglass. Because of the method if smoothing the metalwork uses lead, many Kustom creations are called a “Lead Sled”.
There really are no rules for building a Kustom car, you know right away when you see one and the owners are distinctive as the cars themselves.
The Kustom Kulture has made a resurgence in the past decade and so have Kustom cars, they are more sculpture than car and it’s only limited by your imagination and fab skills.
