One hundred years ago people were looking at the few motor cars on the road as a bit of a phenomenon. 'They'll never last' was bandied around as a catchphrase for pedestrians every time they saw a motor vehicle.

My, how times have changed. In a few short years, the world had moved on to a position where it would virtually come to a standstill if it weren't for the cars that everybody relies on. Real horse power has been exchanged for horse power within engines.

In affluent countries, the majority of the population own or lease new or used cars. Even in the poorest of countries, motor vehicles are still evident. They have become an individual mode of transport that is now an essential part of life. Everybody is in a hurry to be somewhere or do something and if we had to do that by walking, well, it simply wouldn't happen within the time frame called for.

Life has become hectic and people are spread further across the globe. In towns and cities, it is not uncommon for people to have to travel many miles to get backwards and forwards to work every day. This makes the car a vital piece of everyday equipment.

Apart from a house, the car is often the most expensive item you will have to pay out for. It has to be reliable, dependable, trustworthy. It has to get you from A to B with the least amount of assistance and maintenance and on top of all this there is now the pressure to obtain one that is environmentally friendly. All on our limited budgets.

Of course, this market has quickly given rise to a market for used cars. There are those who are fortunate enough to be able to change their vehicles frequently, leaving quite an impressive used cars market for the rest of us. There are also many car manufacturers who have taken control of their own used car market, bringing us quality vehicles with many guarantees and assurances that we are not just picking up someone else's old banger.

It used to be a bit of a joke that used car salesmen were wheeler dealers who could be a little bit dodgy but times have changed here too. Dealing in used cars is now a respectable business. There are less of them about but this means that those left are often reputable and are the ideal place to pick up a bargain in used cars.

It's important for everybody these days that they keep their expenses to a minimum and buying a second hand car is a good way to do this. There is never a good time for the outlay of such an item but if you start to look around before it becomes absolutely necessary, then you have time to find exactly what you are looking for at a very reasonable cost.

Unless, of course, you would like to rely on public transport? Not completely unrealistic but far from the easiest option. The world has become a much smaller place in that virtually every part of it is accessible yet we still need to get to relatives and work etc in as short a time as possible. Hence, the need for cars - new or used.
