Should You Buy a Diesel or Hybrid? by : Gregory
Smyth
There is simply no question about it - you will not be
driving a gasoline powered vehicle for much longer, and perhaps not even a car
with a traditional combustion engine.
While there are plenty of options for electric cars in Hong Kong, hybrid cars in
Hong Kong, and other futuristic ways of powering Hong Kong luxury autos, only a
few are currently viable. We have a look at the pluses and minuses, both for
your vehicle, your wallet, and the planet, of different types of new generation
fuels.
Diesels have been the slightly more energy efficient choice for Hong Kong luxury
car enthusiasts for a while now. The engines are more similar to standard
engines, making maintenance less expensive and the simple concept of driving
them much easier for people to handle.
However, diesel smoke is known to be one of the most polluting substances on the
Earth - so while the Hong Kong luxury autos that run on it may use less fuel to
go the same number of miles, are they really doing anything for the planet's
health?
While there are some lovely diesel engine options, like the Mercedes auto models
that include the innovative Bluetec diesel engine and BMW's diesel options, many
diesel cars have more of an off-road, agricultural feel to them.
The designers can't seem to get past the traditional associations of the diesel
engine, and move into the mindset that luxury automobile dealers in Hong Kong
want from their diesels. The Mercedes auto E320 diesel sedan is a welcome break
from the farm-oriented diesels you usually see.
This new Mercedes car has only a marginally higher base price than the gasoline
version, and gives drivers around 20 miles per gallon in city driving and 29
miles per gallon on the open road.
The Bluetec diesel engine in this Mercedes vehicle is one of the cleanest
available, and the same engine model will soon be available in Audi, Volkswagen
and Chrysler vehicles also.
However, hybrid vehicles are even more advanced in terms of providing amazing
fuel economy. Of course, there are huge savings to be made in terms of fuel
costs, however the starting base price of these electric cars in Hong Kong and
hybrid cars in Hong Kong is typically several thousand dollars higher than
gasoline models.
This means several years of driving is needed to recoup the initial higher cost.
The Mercedes S400 is set to become one of the most popular models of hybrid car
in Hong Kong, with the Toyota Prius currently occupying that space.
The new S400 though is a Hong Kong luxury auto with the familiar Mercedes 3.5L
V6, with 279hp. For a luxury car in Hong Kong that is nearly the size of the
relatively heavy S-class, fuel economy is an amazing 30 mpg.
The Toyota Prius is the original hybrid car, and now that it is in its second
generation version, buying a used Prius is a viable option for many consumers,
bringing the price down. The Prius has a four door hatchback body and is
extremely quiet, as well as economical.
It has a 1.5L gasoline engine as well as two electric motors, and acceleration
is comparable to ordinary gasoline vehicles. Also, you should look out for
federal tax credits in some countries that offset this higher capital input for
hybrid cars.
