What to Do If You Get a Lemon Car by : Bernice
Eker
Almost everyone who has ever bought a car, especially a used
one, has heard about the lemon car. However, they might not be aware of what
exactly a lemon car is.
Basically, a lemon car is a car that breaks down or proves otherwise faulty soon
after you have driven it off the lot. It is called a lemon because that is
exactly how it feels when you end up buying a bad car - like you have just
bitten down on a nasty, sour lemon.
The good news is that every state in the United States has some sort of lemon
law in effect. There is even a federal lemon law set into place to protect
drivers from being taken advantage of by faulty cars. You may need to engage the
services of a lemon law lawyer (try saying that three times fast!) in order to
get satisfactorily reimbursed, but in the scheme of things, it is definitely
well worth the effort. After all, most of us need a car to get around in our day
to day lives. There is no reason in the world to put up with a lemon car.
You need to be aware of the car lemon law put into place by your state when you
are buying a new car - especially if you are buying it used. Unfortunately, used
cars are generally the ones with which you will have to make use of the lemon
law.
Too many used car salesmen try to sell you a sub par vehicle, often at a
comparatively outrageous price, even though the car is no good. When you
consider the fact that there are many states wherein public transportation is
not readily available, you can clearly see the importance of having a reliable,
working vehicle at your disposal.
So, the first step towards buying a car, whether it is brand new or previously
owned, is making sure that you know the lemon law for your state. You should
also make the salesman aware from the onset that you know about federal lemon
law and do not want to be taken advantage of where your new purchase is
concerned.
You always need to be careful when purchasing a car anyway. With car insurance
rates through the roof in some places, you need to be aware before you buy a
car, what it will do to your insurance rates. For instance, in many places, it
actually costs more to insure a brand new car, especially if it is any kind of
sports car. Conversely, it is much more affordable to insure a used car,
especially if the model is a few years older. However, you still want to be sure
that you are not actually purchasing a lemon car, otherwise, what is the point?
If you cannot get around to where you need to go, then finding a good lemon law
lawyer may actually be the least of your concerns. Just be safe, and do a little
research concerning lemon laws and local car dealerships before you make a
purchase.
